"Lee's personal welcome of me and the Malaysian delegation reflected his intention to not only strengthen the Malaysia-Korea ties but also showed that Korea was an ally intending to be Malaysia's partner in the joint development of various issues, not only in the bilateral context but also in international issues," he said. Speaking to Malaysian journalists at the end of his three-day visit to the republic which started on April 4, he said discussions with the president also covered the possibilities of Korean companies, in possession of latest technologies, increasing their investments in Malaysia. They also touched on the bilateral trade between the two countries which has reached US$16 billion and in warrant of a Free Trade Agreement. "We will study in a year's time whether it will be viable for a FTA between Malaysia and the Republic of Korea," he said. The prime minister said the overall response to the visit had been very good which would bring about more meaningful progress to Malaysia. The meetings with the private sector of Korea through roundtable discussions as well as investment seminars had encouraged stronger and greater interest among Korean companies to invest in Malaysia, he said. On tourism, Najib said an increase was expected in the number of Korean visitors to Malaysia with the additional flights being offered by Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia. Malaysia received 230,000 Korean visitors last year. The number of Koreans participating in the Malaysia My Second Home programme is also expected to increase, he said, adding that 500 Korean families have already joined the programme. There are also some 20,000 Korean citizens who are residing in Malaysia as well as 3,000 Korean students pursuing their studies in Malaysia. -- BERNAMA Add this page to your favorite Social Bookmarking websites
