KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 12, 2010): The Tourism Ministry forked out RM244,720 for its minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, her companion and a senior government officer for a 10-day mission to Australia and New Zealand.

"The sales mission is among the marketing strategy which is vital to attract tourists, apart from advertising and media publicity to add a personal touch for tourism operators, airline companies and foreign media who are the target markets.

"The mission also gave an opportunity to review the products or the latest attractions in the market that may be exemplified by Malaysian tourism operators,” said the ministry.

The ministry said this in a written reply to Fong Po Kuan (Batu Gajah-DAP) who had asked about the total cost of the 10-day mission, the places Ng visited and the inspiration obtained during the visits.

The ministry said that the mission to New Zealand and Australia from Aug 18 to 29 was the first headed by a minister since 2004. It is also the first mission to New Zealand.

"About five private agencies and three government agencies also participated in the mission with the cost paid for by the respective agencies."

Among the cities visited during the 10-day mission were Auckland, Rotorua, Christchurch, Queenstown and Milford Sound in New Zealand, and Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide in Australia.

The mission also included seminar, media interviews and festivities for the parties involved in the sale of Malaysia’s tourism packages.

Among the products given focus were parks and gardens, homestays, Malaysia My Second Home programme, food and golf, shopping, diving, heritage, eco-tourism and Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (Mice) destinations.

"The mission also reviewed community-based tourism created by the Maori community in New Zealand and that model can be emulated in Malaysia as we have many ethnicities," said the ministry.
