British backpackers planning a trip abroad may be interested to learn that the largest group of European travelers to Malaysia came from the UK in 2008. Last year’s Formula One sporting event combined with massive investment in eco-trips and improved facilities for all travelers, including backpackers staying in hostels, made Malaysia a popular 2008 destination. Each month during 2008 the number of travelers drawn to Malaysia by the scenery and cosmopolitan cities increased by at least ten per cent. Mr Amirrudin Abu, acting director general of Tourism Malaysia, commented: “We have achieved an all-time high figure of 22,052,488 tourist arrivals. “This is certainly an accomplishment considering the fact that 2008 had been a very trying time for us and a very challenging one as well.” He added that the rise in numbers of travelers to Malaysia was testament to the efforts of all those involved in the travel sector. Mr Abu also thanked the Malaysian media for raising the profile of the country.
