Malaysia Strives to Improve International Competitiveness Print E-mail

KUALA LUMPUR—Malaysia continues its efforts to improve business competitiveness with the help from three dedicated task forces, says the country’s prime minister.

Speaking at a dinner event held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre last Friday night, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said that the three task forces need to work closely to making Malaysia the preferred investment destination, a profitable place to do business, and a great place to live.

The tasks forces are The Special Task Force to Facilitate Business (PEMUDAH), the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU), and the Talent Corporation Malaysia.

“Our goal is to enhance Malaysia’s competitiveness, it is as simple as that,” said Prime Minister Najib in launching the PERMUDAH 2010 annual report at the dinner.

In his keynote speech, Prime Minister Najib praised the members of PEMUDAH for successfully changing the mindsets of the public and private sectors to view each other as a partner in shared projects and common goals.

He also praised PEMUDAH for its contributions to reviews of trade and competition policy over the past four years.

Prime Minister Najib paid tribute to Tan Sri Mohd Sidek and Tan Sri Datuk Yong Poh Kon for leadership in PEMUDAH and he said PEMUDAH embodies the 1Malaysia concept and its tag line “People first, performance now.”

“PEMUDAH has been a driving force in setting up the New Commercial Courts; and you have worked tirelessly to improve the Malaysia My Second Home Program, and to overhaul procedures for the high-skilled immigration that will boost knowledge economy,” said Prime Minister Najib.

In 2010, the most notable achievements of PEMUDAH allowed the government to reduce property registration time from 41 days to just 1 day and the incorporation of companies from 11 days to just 1 day. Last year, PEMUDAH also introduced the Malaysian Corporate Identity Number (MyCoID) and a new points system to help decide who qualifies for permanent resident.

The Special Task Force to Facilitate Business (PEMUDAH) was created by former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Badawi four years ago out of the need for a closer collaboration between the public and private sector. After four years, PEMUDAH remains one of the driving forces to improve Malaysia’s business efficiency.

Prime Minister Najib is pleased with the collaborative efforts of PEMUDAH and public sector organizations. Malaysia improved its ranking in the World Bank Doing Business Report, from 23rd to 21st position for 2011. He said Malaysia’s ranking also improved significantly from 18th position to 10th in the Institute of Management Development’s (IMD) 2010 World Competitiveness Yearbook.

“Although we are not driven solely by international rankings, such comparisons help keep Malaysians focused in a world of intense global competition,” said Prime Minister Najib.
