State Tourism Development and Environment Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said efforts to spur two-way tourism opportunities between Penang and Taiwan should be intensified.

“I have proposed to Taiwan Visitors Association (TVA) about having a joint effort in holding roadshows on various tourism areas.

“TVA is hoping to explore the new Malay-speaking community market while the Penang Tourism Action Council (PTAC) wants to promote our MM2H programme and eco and heritage tourism in Taiwan,” he told a press conference at the Tour Taiwan 2008-2009 dinner at Evergreen Laurel Hotel recently.

TVA director Chang Fu-Nan said Taiwan had recorded a 22.86% increase in tourist arrivals to 141,308 in 2007.

“Our Kuala Lumpur office was set up last year to help Malaysians know Taiwan better and to spur tourism between both destina-tions,” he said.

He added Taiwan was offering incentives such as extra flights and cash awards for tour agents and tourists in conjunction with Tour Taiwan Years.

“We are also strengthening our international publicity and improving the tourism environment to attract more visitors,” he said.
